SUMMERFLING2010! Getting Ready for Kingston!

This weekend is the Ontario Young Liberals‘ annual Summer Fling policy conference! Summer Fling will be taking place at Queen’s University in Kingston this year and the Toronto Centre Young Liberals will be bringing the largest contingent of TCYLers than we have ever brought before!

Furthermore, continuing our strong tradition of policy development, for the fifth consecutive year TCYL will be presenting policies to be voted on at Summer Fling. We have our Federal Policy Director, Adlan Taramov presenting his policy on Neighbourhood Revitalization and Development and Gloria Lee (in conjunction with the York University Young Liberals) presenting her policy on Increasing Funding for Legal Aid Ontario.

We look forward to seeing you all in Kingston and hope that we can count on your support!

TCYL NEWS! Toronto Region Policy Parliament 2010

Hi everyone

Just writing a quick update to report that this past weekend at the OYL Toronto Region Policy Parliament, the Toronto Centre Young Liberals managed to get two of their policies passed, making it the fifth consecutive year that TCYL has had their policies move on to Summer Fling.

TCYL presented a total of eight policies:

Addressing Canada’s Economic Challenges by Improving Literacy in New Canadians and At Risk Canadians, Taras Koulik
Encouraging a Mixed Economy, Jose De Ocampo
School Safety Policy, Adlan Taramov
Offshore Oil Spill Prevention Policy, Adlan Taramov
New Legislation to Replace Canada’s Current Unmerited Cannabis Laws, Salim Dhanani
Addressing Canada’s Demographic Changes by Improving the Permanent Residency Process, Denise Lam
Neighbourhood Revitalization and Development Policy, Adlan Taramov
Increased Funding for Legal Aid Ontario, Gloria Lee, in conjunction with the York University Young Liberals

We would like to thank all our policy writers and presenters for all their hard work, and congratulate Gloria Lee and Adlan Taramov as their respective policies on Increased funding for Legal Aid Ontario and Neighbourhood Revitalization and Development will be moving on to Summer Fling this year in Kingston! We would also like to extend our congratulations to our colleagues at the York University Young Liberals, whose policies on Increased Funding for Mental Health and Increased Penalties for Impaired Driving will also be moving on to Kingston. We hope to see you all there!

2) Liberal Youth Party of Canada (LYPC)

TCYL’s own Director of Social Affairs, Max Naylor, is the Leader of the Liberal Youth Parliament of Canada and currently running to be the Prime Minister of the Canadian Youth Assembly (CYA). The CYA is a non-profit organization which educates youth across the country about their local and national communities as well as the federal political process.

Fellow TCYLer Mark Drew is also running as a candidate in Bramalea-Gore-Malton so we need to ensure that we register to vote and support Max and Mark! 3) York University Young Liberal Leadership Conference

On Sunday, March 21st, the York University Young Liberals hosted a day-long conference featuring over 20 MPs and Liberal leaders (including Toronto Centre MP Bob Rae). The conference provided youth with sessions based on fundraising, diversity, campaigning, and conflict management. 4) Canada at 150: Rising to the Challenge

We are proud to announce that TCYL’s Director of Communications, Yvonne Leung, will be attending the Canada at 150: Rising to the Challenge conference in Montreal from March 26-28th. The conference will be dealing with five particular challenges approaching Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, which include sessions such as:

Jobs Today and Tomorrow: the Productive Society of 2017

Real Life Issues for Canadian Families

The Creative and Competitive Economy

Energy, Environment, Economy: Growth and Responsibility in 2017

A Strong Presence in the World of 2017: Commerce, Values, and Relationships

“The Canada at 150 Conference”

On March 26th – 28th, 2010, Michael Ignatieff, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, will be hosting The Canada at 150 Conference in Montréal. This conference will be about framing a dialogue around the big issues that will determine the future well-being of Canadian families, individuals and communities.

Conference: Canada at 150: Rising to the Challenge is about the future. It’s about bringing together leading thinkers and doers from coast to coast to coast across Canada and around the world to grapple with realizing Canada’s full potential when we mark our 150th anniversary in 2017.

The conference is being webcast live at http://www.can150.ca and an interactive participation via satellite will be beamed from registered sites across the country.

It was a fantastic conference with 20 MPs in attendance and leading sessions throughout the day, and over 80 young Liberal participants.

Ontario Young Liberals AGM

The OYL AGM has been called for the weekend of March 12-14 in Richmond Hill. This is a great way to connect with young Liberals across the province, to listen to guest speakers, and to vote in the annual OYL elections.

Furthermore, TCYL’s very own federal president Denise Lam, will be seeking re-election to the Treasurer position so we want to ensure we have a large contingent out to support her!

LPC(O) AGM Re-cap

On February 5-7th, TCYL went to the Liberal Party of Canada (Ontario) AGM which took place at Caesars Windsor. Many TCYLers participated in the policy discussions and helped Toronto Centre’s Lawrence Pinkney get elected to be the Treasurer of LPC(O).

It was a fun and productive weekend and we were proud to have yet another Toronto Centre native elected to a Liberal Party position — congratulations Lawrence!

George Smitherman Mayoral Campaign

Former Toronto Centre MPP and mayoral candidate George Smitherman kicked off his campaign on February 7th with a grand opening at his downtown campaign office located at Church and The Esplanade. It was a highly successful opening with over 600 guests in attendance!

1) Provincial By-Election Update

The Toronto Centre provincial by-election is underway and we have a fantastic candidate representing us – Glen Murray! Many TCYLers have been canvassing everyday, but we need your help. If you can spare a couple of hours a day, please drop by Glen’s campaign office at 366 Bloor St. East (at Sherbourne subway station; northwest corner of Bloor/Sherbourne) to help with canvassing or making phone calls.

This Saturday, January 23^rd, there will be a large contingent of Young Liberals coming from across the province for a meet-and-greet with Glen, followed by an afternoon canvass. Please join us at 11am for this special event! You can find the Facebook event group here: http://bit.ly/7UVRi5

2) Upcoming Events

It is time for one of TCYL’s favourite annual events of the year — Ontario Model Parliament (OMP)! OMP is a signature event hosted by the Ontario Young Liberals, where youth from all over Ontario come to Queen’s Park to simulate an average day for a Member of Provincial Parliament. We will have caucus meetings, undergo Question Period, and hear from special guest speakers. TCYL Nuit Rouge a Success – Thank You for Your Support!

TCYL Nuit Rouge was a huge success and we would like to extend our gratitude to all those who attended and/or donated. We had an enjoyable evening filled with great conversation, drinks, and company. We have a lot of people to be grateful for in assisting us in a very successful fundraiser:

The artwork at the Show and Tell Gallery was especially a hit and we thank Simon Cole greatly for all of his assistance with the evening and allowing us to use the beautiful venue located at 1161 Dundas St. West (Dundas and Ossington);

The delicious food catered by Jorel Claudio of Jorel’s Catering Services which included mini quiches and mini sirloin burgers, as well as lemon tarts for dessert;

The beats playing all night were courtesy of DJ Sam Kashani;

The beautiful invites printed by Miraz Manji at TLAC Printing;

The professional photos taken by Aurash G Photography which will be up on our website very shortly;

The drinks bartended by our friends Daniel Magalhaes and Robin Kennedy;

The Toronto Centre Federal Liberal Association, especially Lawrence Pinkney and Vivien Dzau, for all of their advice and help with the organizing of our event;

Trinity Spadina federal Liberal candidate Christine Innes (the next MP for Trin-Spa!);

Our special guest Davenport MP Mario Silva for his gracious words, specifically about saving the arts;

And of course our very own MP for Toronto Centre, Bob Rae for consistently being supportive and always making time for TCYL.
